While I was looking for some cute clipboards for my new office space, I was a little taken aback by the cost of the ones that were a little fancy. The thing is, they weren’t anything special. The boards were just painted with a design or maybe a flower in the corner. As I was looking at them, I realized you could save money and DIY your own fancy clipboards that are more personalized and would fit better in the office.
Grab a couple plain clipboard at the store.
I found some regular pressed board clipboards at Walmart like this one. As you can see they are pretty inexpensive. The first you’ll want to do is take a sturdy piece of wire and wire the clamp open. You’ll want to use a little more sturdy wire or the pressure of the clamp can cause it to break. I know this from experience!
This not only makes it easier to paint the board, but it will keep the clamp from marring your paint job once you’ve finished. You’ll want to leave the wire in place until the paint is not only dry but has a chance to cure for at least 24 hours or so.
I used some of the chalk paint that I had left over from painting the cabinets in my office. I just painted the front and sides of the board, but you could paint the back also. It’ll just take a little longer since you need to let the front dry before turning it over to paint the back. Once it was dry, I used a white wax and wiped it down. I like the stressed look the wax gives to the blue.
Now we get to make them our own.
Once everything was dry and set, I grabbed my box of stencils and pulled out my favorite. This clock piece stencil always turns out even if you make a few smudges.
I decided to do four different clock faces over the front of the board. It’s simple but I like the simpler look. I had purchased two clipboards so I decided to stencil a border onto the other board and it was really simple to do since I only had to place the stencil once.
So Save Money and DIY Your Own Fancy Clipboards
For less than two dollars each, I had a clipboard that is just as pretty as those at the store. But for me, they’re even better because they’re exactly the way I wanted them and I didn’t have to settle for what was on the shelf. So run out and get yourself a few and try it out. Send us a picture of your finished clipboards. We’d love to see them!
